Lost in the City Centre
المستوى 1 · قصة 3
It is Wednesday afternoon and I am walking through the city centre. I have been shopping all morning and now I want to go back to my hotel. But there is a problem. I do not know where I am. The streets all look the same to me. I have a map but I cannot find my street on it. I see a woman standing near the bus station. She has a kind face. I go to her and say, "Excuse me, can you help me please? I am lost. I do not understand where I am on this map." She smiles and says, "Of course! Where do you want to go?" I say, "I am looking for the Hilton Hotel. Do you know where it is?" She says, "Yes, I know it. It is not very far from here. Let me show you on your map." She takes my map and points to a street.
The woman says, "You are here, near the bus station. The Hilton Hotel is here, about ten minutes on foot. It is quite easy to get there." I say, "How do I get to the Hilton Hotel from here?" She says, "Go straight ahead along this road until you reach the traffic lights. Then turn right. Walk past the library and the fountain. After the fountain, you will see a big park on your left. The hotel is opposite the park, next to the cinema." I say, "So I go straight ahead, turn right at the traffic lights, and it is opposite the park?" She says, "Yes, that is correct. You cannot miss it. It is a tall building with a blue sign." I say, "How far is it exactly?" She says, "About eight hundred metres. It will take you ten minutes if you walk at a normal speed."
I say, "Thank you very much. You are very kind." She says, "You are welcome. Are you on holiday here?" I say, "Yes, I am. I have been here since Monday. The city is beautiful but the streets are confusing." She laughs and says, "Yes, many tourists say that. The old part of the city was built hundreds of years ago and the streets go in all directions. My advice is to always look for the church tower. You can see it from almost everywhere in the centre. The hotel is just two streets south of the church." I say, "That is very helpful advice. I will remember that." She says, "Have a lovely afternoon. Enjoy your holiday!" I say, "Thank you. You too. Goodbye!" I start walking in the direction she showed me. I feel much better now that I know where to go.
I walk straight ahead as the woman told me. I pass a bakery, a bookshop, and a small café. The smell of fresh bread from the bakery is wonderful. I reach the traffic lights and turn right. Now I can see the library on my left. It is a big old building with tall windows. Next to it is the fountain. The fountain has water shooting up into the air and there are coins at the bottom where people have made wishes. I keep walking past the fountain. I can see trees ahead of me. That must be the park. I walk a little further and yes, there it is! The park is on my left with green grass, flowers, and benches. And on my right, across the road, I can see a tall building with a blue sign that says "Hilton Hotel." I have found it! I am so happy and relieved.
I cross the road and go into the hotel. The lobby is cool and quiet after the busy streets outside. I go to the front desk and say, "Good afternoon. I am in room 412. I am afraid I have lost my room key somewhere in the city. I am very sorry." The woman at the desk says, "Do not worry, it happens all the time. Can I see your passport so I can verify your identity?" I get my passport from my bag and give it to her. She checks it on her computer and says, "Yes, Miss Sophie Brown, room 412. I will make you a new key right now." She takes a blank card and programs it. "Here you are. Your new key. Please be careful with this one!" I say, "I will. Thank you very much. I am sorry for the trouble." She says, "It is no trouble at all. Is there anything else I can help you with?"
I say, "Yes, actually. I have two questions. First, where can I book a taxi for tomorrow morning? I need to go to the airport." She says, "I can book one for you right now. What time do you need it?" I say, "My flight is at eleven, so I think I need to leave at eight in the morning. How long does it take to get to the airport?" She says, "It takes about forty minutes by taxi, depending on traffic. I would suggest leaving at eight to be safe." I say, "Perfect. Please book a taxi for eight am." She types something on her computer and says, "Done. A taxi will be here at eight tomorrow morning. What is your second question?" I say, "Can I get a map of the city? A better one than the one I have. Mine is very small and hard to read."
She says, "Of course! Here is our hotel map. It is much more detailed. It shows all the main streets, the tourist attractions, the bus stops, and the metro stations. The hotel is marked with a red star so you can always find your way back." I take the map and look at it. It is much better than my old one. I can see the church, the park, the museum, the river, and the train station all clearly marked. I say, "This is wonderful. Thank you so much." She says, "You are welcome. I have also circled the best restaurants in the area. There is an Italian restaurant two streets away that is very popular." I say, "That sounds lovely. I will try it tonight." She says, "Enjoy! And do not hesitate to call the front desk if you need anything else."
I take the elevator to the fourth floor and go to my room. I open the door with my new key and go inside. I put my shopping bags on the bed and sit in the chair by the window. I am tired from all the walking today. I take off my shoes and rest my feet. From my window I can see the park below. There are children playing on the grass and an old man sitting on a bench reading a newspaper. A dog is running around chasing a ball. It is a peaceful scene. I look at the clock. It is half past four. I have a few hours before dinner. I decide to take a shower and then rest for a while. The hot water is working perfectly today. I feel refreshed after my shower. I lie on the bed and close my eyes for a few minutes.
At seven in the evening, I get dressed and go out for dinner. I have the new map with me this time, so I will not get lost again. I walk to the Italian restaurant that the receptionist recommended. It is easy to find, just two streets from the hotel, on the corner next to a flower shop. The restaurant is small and cosy with red and white checked tablecloths and candles on every table. A waiter greets me at the door. "Good evening! A table for one?" I say, "Yes, please." He takes me to a nice table near the back. I order pasta with tomato sauce and a glass of red wine. The food is simple but absolutely delicious. The pasta is fresh and the sauce is made with real tomatoes and herbs. I eat slowly and enjoy every bite.
After dinner, I pay the bill. It is eighteen euros including the wine. I leave a three euro tip because the service was excellent. I say, "Thank you. The food was wonderful. I will come back again before I leave." The waiter says, "Thank you, Miss. You are always welcome. Good night!" I walk back to the hotel using my new map. This time I do not get lost at all. I know exactly where I am. I pass the flower shop, turn left, walk past the park, and there is my hotel. It is a quarter past nine. I go to my room, brush my teeth, and get into bed. Tomorrow I have to get up early for my taxi to the airport at eight. I set my alarm for six thirty. It has been a good day, even though I got lost. Good night!
