A Day of Shopping

Ниво 2 · История 1

It is Saturday morning and I want to go shopping. I look out of the window and the weather is perfect. It is sunny and warm, about twenty degrees. I think I will wear my light jacket and comfortable shoes because I plan to walk around the shops all day. My friend Maria calls me and asks, "What are you doing today?" I tell her I want to go to the big shopping centre in the city. She says, "Can I come with you? I am looking for a gift for my mother's birthday." I say, "Of course! Let us meet at the bus stop at ten." She says, "Perfect. I will be there." I get dressed, have a quick breakfast of coffee and toast, and check my wallet. I have fifty euros in cash and my credit card. That should be enough for today.

Maria and I meet at the bus stop. She looks happy and excited. She is wearing a blue dress and carrying a big shopping bag. I ask her, "What kind of gift are you looking for?" She thinks for a moment and says, "I am not sure yet. Maybe something for the kitchen? My mother loves cooking. Or maybe a nice scarf? She always wears scarves." I say, "Let us look at both and see what we can find." The bus comes and we get on. Maria tells me about a new shop that opened last month. She says, "They sell beautiful handmade things. Jewellery, scarves, bags, and home decorations. Everything is made locally." I say, "That sounds perfect for a gift. Let us go there first." The bus takes us to the shopping centre in fifteen minutes.

We arrive at the shopping centre. It is very big with three floors of shops. There are clothes shops, shoe shops, electronics shops, a bookshop, and many cafés and restaurants. Maria says, "Where shall we start?" I say, "Let us find that new handmade shop you told me about." We look at the directory board near the entrance. Maria finds it on the second floor. We take the escalator up. The shop is called "Local Treasures" and it has a beautiful window display with colourful scarves and silver jewellery. We go inside. A friendly woman greets us and says, "Good morning! Can I help you with anything?" Maria says, "I am just looking, thank you. I am looking for a gift for my mother." The woman says, "Take your time. Everything is handmade by local artists."

Maria looks at the scarves. There are silk ones, wool ones, and cotton ones in every colour you can imagine. She picks up a beautiful green silk scarf and says, "What do you think of this one?" I look at it carefully. It is soft and light with a pattern of leaves and flowers. I say, "It is gorgeous. Your mother will love it. How much is it?" Maria looks at the price tag. "Thirty-five euros," she says. "That is a bit more than I wanted to spend. Do you have something cheaper?" she asks the shop assistant. The woman shows her a cotton scarf for twenty euros. It is also beautiful, with blue and white stripes. Maria thinks about it and says, "I prefer the green one. It is my mother's favourite colour. I will take it." The woman wraps it in tissue paper and puts it in a gift bag.

While Maria pays for the scarf, I look around the shop. I find a beautiful pair of earrings made from blue glass. They catch the light and sparkle. I think they would look nice on me. I ask the woman, "How much are these earrings?" She says, "Those are eighteen euros. They are made by a local glass artist." I decide to buy them. It is a treat for myself. I pay with my card and the woman puts them in a small velvet box. Maria comes over and says, "Those are lovely! Good choice." I say, "Thank you. Now, shall we look at some clothes? I want to find a new shirt for work." Maria says, "Yes! I also want to try on some jeans. I saw a sale sign in the window of that shop downstairs." We leave the handmade shop and go back to the first floor.

We find the clothes shop with the sale. There is a big sign that says "Up to fifty percent off!" Maria goes straight to the jeans section. She picks up three pairs and asks a shop assistant, "Where is the changing room?" He points to the back of the shop and says, "Over there, on the right." I look at the shirts. There are formal ones for work and casual ones for weekends. I find a nice white shirt with small blue dots. It is reduced from forty euros to twenty-five. I think that is a good price. I also find a grey blazer that looks smart. I try it on. It fits perfectly. The original price was eighty euros but it is now fifty. I ask the assistant, "Can I try this on with the shirt?" He says, "Of course. The fitting room is free now."

I try on the shirt and blazer together. They look great. I come out of the changing room and Maria is waiting. She has chosen one pair of jeans. She says, "Those look amazing on you! Very professional." I say, "Thank you! I think I will take both. What about your jeans?" She shows me. They are dark blue and slim-fitting. She says, "They were forty euros, reduced to twenty-four. I am happy with that." We go to the checkout together. The cashier scans our items. My total is seventy-five euros for the shirt and blazer. Maria pays twenty-four for her jeans. The cashier asks, "Do you need a shopping bag?" Maria says, "No thank you, I have my own." I say, "Yes please, I need one." She gives me a paper bag and we leave the shop.

It is now half past twelve and we are both hungry. Maria says, "Shall we find somewhere to eat?" I say, "Yes, I am starving. What do you feel like?" She thinks and says, "How about the food court on the third floor? There are lots of options there." We take the escalator up to the third floor. There is Italian food, Asian food, burgers, salads, and a sandwich bar. I decide to have a chicken salad and a glass of juice. Maria wants pasta with tomato sauce and a coffee. We find a table near the window with a view of the city. The food is good and we talk about our morning. Maria says, "I am happy I found the scarf. My mother is going to love it." I say, "And I am happy with my new work clothes. It was a successful morning!"

After lunch, Maria asks, "Do you want to look at anything else?" I think about it. I say, "I would like to look at the electronics shop. I want to find a new phone case. Mine is broken." We go to the electronics shop on the ground floor. They have hundreds of phone cases in every colour and style. I find a simple black leather one that looks smart and professional. It costs twelve euros. I also see some wireless headphones on sale. They are normally sixty euros but today they are thirty-nine. I ask the shop assistant, "Do you offer a warranty on these?" He says, "Yes, one year warranty on all electronics." I decide to buy them too. Maria finds a phone charger that she needs. She says, "I have been looking for one of these everywhere! Only eight euros. Perfect."

We leave the shopping centre at three in the afternoon. We are both carrying several bags. Maria says, "What a great day! I found everything I wanted." I say, "Me too. And we found some things we did not plan to buy!" She laughs and says, "That always happens when you go shopping." We walk to the bus stop. While we wait, Maria asks, "What are you doing tomorrow?" I tell her I do not have any plans yet. She says, "Do you want to come to my house for lunch? I am going to cook something nice." I say, "That sounds lovely. What time?" She says, "Come at one. I will make my special pasta." I say, "I will bring some wine." The bus arrives and we get on. I feel happy. It has been a wonderful day with a good friend, and tomorrow I have something nice to look forward to.
